Episode 292: The Shining (1980)

Special Guests: Douglas Milsome, Garrett Brown, Rodney Ascher, Rob Ager
Guest Co-Hosts: Keith Gordon, Vincenzo Natali

Adapted from a novel by , Stanley Kubrick The Shining (1980) tells the tale of Jack (Jack Nicholson), Wendy, (Shelley Duvall) and Danny (Danny Lloyd) Torrance, a family who spend a winter at the Overlook Hotel in Colorado. Jack plans on writing a book but, instead, battles the inner demons of alcoholism and anger, slowly going mad perhaps with the help of the ghosts of the Overlook...

Directors Keith Gordon and Vincenzo Natali join Mike to discuss Stanley Kubrick and The Shining as well as the many interpretations of the films (as presented in works like Rodney Ascher's Room 237 and Rob Ager's Collative Learning series).

Along with Ascher and Ager, cameraman Douglas Milsome and Steadicam operator (and inventor) Garrett Brown reminisce about working with Stanley Kubrick.

  1. Not only did they never release the 2001 footage found in the salt mine, but Warner Bros. said "oh, yeah, we've had identical footage to that forever, and nope, we won't let yoy see it." http://www.slashfilm.com/warner-bros-responds-17-minutes-lost-2001-space-odyssey-footage/

Yes, there was a scene shot where Jack is looking through the scrapbook of the Hotel's history. A badly damaged photograph from it is all that has surfaced.

Kubrick created the international cut because he believed that international audiences were more sophisticated than American ones and wouldn't have to have everything explained to them. This sort of worked against him when it was reported that audiences in those screenings were confused by large amounts of it.

  2. You have to feel sorry for Shelley Duvall. She went from working with Altman, famous for being really kind to his actors, to Kubrick, who was merciless with her.

  3. Will be tackling this one over the weekend...
Since you mentioned THE SHINING musical, I can only wonder if you also mentioned the opera that premiered late Spring this year.

  4. By far the most satisfying discussion and/or opinion piece I've heard on ROOM 237! Great roundtable, Mike, discussing that documentary with two filmmakers!

Btw, I'm not sure *anyone* has seen Kubrick's face in the clouds aside from that 1 interviewee in the film.
